Lorenzo Musetti hasn’t played since Rome, where he picked up a thigh injury.
The Italian subsequently withdrew from the Hamburg Open and the French Open, before skipping Queen’s.
Unfortunately for Musetti, he won’t be fit to play Wimbledon either.
Who is your early shout to win the men’s Wimbledon title?
Musetti announced his latest withdrawal on social media.
Lorenzo Musetti admits he hasn’t started a ‘full athletic training program’ yet as he withdraws from Wimbledon
The 2024 Wimbledon semi-finalist issued the following statement on Instagram.
“I want to update you on my recovery from the injury I sustained in Rome: rehabilitation is going very well, and the medical results are encouraging,” said Musetti.
“Unfortunately, as I have not yet been able to begin a full athletic training program, and after careful evaluation, we have come to the difficult conclusion that I will not be able to participate in Wimbledon this year.

“It is not an easy decision, but it is the right one.
“My priority is to return to the court at 100%.
“Thank you for your continued support. See you soon.”
Musetti received messages of support from several fellow pros, including Holger Rune and Marta Kostyuk.
“Get well soon man!” said Rune.
“Speedy recovery!!” added Kostyuk.
Musetti hasn’t played a match in 36 days, as injuries continue to derail his 2026 campaign.
The Italian led Novak Djokovic by two sets to love in the Australian Open quarter-finals this January, when he suffered a lower back injury that forced him to retire from the match.
After recovering from that injury, Musetti returned in March for Indian Wells, where he lost his opening match.
A relatively unsuccessful clay-court campaign followed before Musetti picked up a ‘rectus femoris’ injury in Rome.
Six months into the year, Musetti has only played seven tournaments and 20 matches.
Lorenzo Musetti’s 2026 season
| Tournament | Performance | Match wins | Defeat |
| Hong Kong Open | Final | 3 (Tomas Martin Etcheverry, Coleman Wong, Andrey Rublev) | Alexander Bublik |
| Australian Open | Quarter-final | 4 (Raphael Collignon, Lorenzo Sonego, Tomas Machac, Taylor Fritz) | Novak Djokovic |
| Indian Wells | Second round | – | Marton Fucsovics |
| Monte Carlo Masters | Second round | – | Valentin Vacherot |
| Barcelona Open | Quarter-final | 2 (Martin Landaluce, Corentin Moutet) | Arthur Fils |
| Madrid Open | Fourth round | 2 (Hubert Hurkacz, Tallon Griekspoor) | Jiri Lehecka |
| Italian Open | Fourth round | 2 (Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, Francisco Cerundolo) | Casper Ruud |
Musetti’s forced inactivity has seen him tumble down the rankings.
The former world number five now sits 15th in the ‘Live ATP Rankings’.
Live ATP Rankings
- 13. Andrey Rublev – 2,420 points
- 14. Jiri Lehecka – 2,360 points
- 15. Lorenzo Musetti – 2,325 points
- 16. Luciano Darderi – 2,300 points
- 17. Jakub Mensik – 2,295 points
And with Musetti set for another spell on the sidelines, it won’t be long before he drops out of the top 20.
He has accumulated fewer points than 28 other players so far this year.
Live ATP Race
- 27. Alexander Blockx – 955 points
- 28. Joao Fonseca – 950 points
- 29. Lorenzo Musetti – 885 points
- 30. Ugo Humbert – 875 points
- 31. Valentin Vacherot – 860 points
Given that Musetti often enjoys the majority of his ATP Tour success on clay and grass courts, that’s bad news for the Italian.
If he wants any chance of finishing 2026 anywhere close to the top 10, he will need to find a level he hasn’t shown before on hard courts when he returns.
When will Lorenzo Musetti return?
Musetti could return for the North American hard-court season, where he could play in Washington before the two Masters 1000 events and the US Open.
Or, he may choose to attend the post-Wimbledon clay-court tournaments.

What better way for Musetti to build back match practice and sharpness than to compete on his favourite surface?
If he is fit to do so, Musetti could play any of the following clay-court tournaments later this summer.
- Swedish Open – ATP 250
- Swiss Open – ATP 250
- Croatia Open – ATP 250
- Austrian Open – ATP 250
- Estoril Open – ATP 250
The Swedish Open, Swiss Open, and Croatia Open will start the week beginning Monday, July 13.
