Lorenzo Musetti issues statement after withdrawing from Roland Garros, ‘incredibly hard to take’

Lorenzo Musetti will not participate in Paris this year.

Musetti, who reached the semi-finals of last year’s event, suffered a leg injury during his most recent outing against Casper Ruud at the Italian Open.

Unfortunately for Musetti, the injury has proved too severe for him to participate in Roland Garros this year.

Musetti is the second high-profile figure to withdraw from the French Open Men’s Singles event, after Carlos Alcaraz.

The Italian star, ranked 10th in the world, issued a heartbreaking statement on social media, announcing his withdrawal from the Hamburg Open and Roland Garros.

“After yesterday’s match, I underwent medical examinations which revealed a rectus femoris injury, requiring several weeks of rest and recovery,” Musetti said in an Instagram post.

“Unfortunately, this means I won’t be able to compete in Hamburg and Roland Garros — news that is incredibly hard to take.

“A huge thank you to the Rome crowd for your incredible support: that’s exactly why, despite not being 100%, I chose to step on court and give everything I had in my home tournament.

“I’ll keep you updated.”

The withdrawal represents a bitter blow for the Italian, who was undoubtedly one of the favourites to win this year’s Roland Garros title following the withdrawal of two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz.

Can anyone now stop Jannik Sinner from winning Roland Garros after Carlos Alcaraz’s withdrawal?

If yes, who?

The Italian enjoyed his best performance at the event last year, defeating Holger Rune and Frances Tiafoe on his way to the semi-finals.

In the last four, he was forced to retire midway through his match against Carlos Alcaraz.

It has been an injury-plagued season for the Italian so far. Earlier this year, he suffered a right leg injury while two sets ahead against Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open quarter-finals.

The injury kept him from competing for over one month.

How will Lorenzo Musetti’s ranking be affected?

Following his withdrawal, Musetti is set to lose 800 ATP ranking points.

This will affect his ranking significantly: the Italian will likely fall to at least world number 15 following the conclusion of the French Open next month.
