After easing past Simona Halep of Romania in the first round at the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford, the German produced an outstanding display of serving to see off fourth-seed Sam Stosur 6-3, 7-5.

Lisicki, who clocked a 124mph serve at the All England Club, sent 13 aces past her Australian opponent on her way to victory.

The current world no.26 hit the headlines at SW19 after defeating Roland Garros champ Na Li before eventually succumbing to Maria Sharapova at the semi-final stage.

Her performances at Wimbledon marked an impressive return from a potentially career-ending ankle injury, which saw her fall outside the world’s top 200.

Lisicki is now being talked about as a possible US Open contender and with a lethal serve in her armour, who’s to argue.

The German now faces the fifth seed, Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland, for a place in the semi-finals.
