The Premier event is one of three new WTA tournaments in China this year and will boast a star-studded field. Two-time Grand Slam champions Li and Kvitova will be joined at the Optics Valley International Tennis Centre by world No.1 Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova and Jelena Jankovic from September 21-27.

“I'm so proud that my city is staging such a prestigious tournament,” said Li. “I am very excited about being part of such a strong field of players and I can't wait to get on court and play in front of my home crowd."

The hard court tournament is one of two Premier events in China along with the China Open in Beijing. Wuhan is the capital of Hubei province and is the most populous city in Central China.

“It’s always exciting to play in a different city and to experience a new tournament,” said Kvitova. “Li Na has told me about Wuhan so I’m really looking forward to being there and playing in front of new fans.”

As well as bringing a stellar line-up of players, the Wuhan Open has also attracted an impressive portfolio of sponsors. Dongfeng Motor Corporation is the new title sponsor of the event while there are also 16 supporting sponsors – Wanda Group, Taikang Life, Hankou Bank, Ganten, Coca Cola, TANITA, Hongxing Erke Group, TCL, BesTV, Humanwell Health Care Group, Wilson, Upman Hearse, Hoston, Royal Selangor, Shelter and Honeycomb.
