Learner Tien has been one of the stories of the ATP Tour in 2025, but there have still been big lessons for the young American.

Tien’s China Open final against Jannik Sinner helped the 19 year old reach a career-high ranking of World No. 36 on the ATP Tour.

After skipping the first week of the European indoor circuit, the American has slipped to World No. 39 but he still has a huge chance of gaining seeded entry at the Australian Open.

After his victory against Nuno Borges at the Paris Masters, the star reflected on his impressive debut year on the ATP Tour.

Learner Tien shares his thoughts on his 2025 season

Tien, along with Jakub Mensik and Joao Fonseca, look set to become the next big stars on the ATP Tour, but they still have some way to go.

The young American’s maturity is one of the most impressive aspects of his game and he was typically level-headed when asked about his 2025 season.

Asked what he’s learned by The Tennis Channel, the American teenager revealed: “Just trying to take what I can from the wins and losses.

“Obviously it’s tougher to take some things from the wins, so you’ve got to appreciate the losses a little bit, especially first time around.”

The star revealed that he’s constantly taking lessons from the top players on the tour who have, at times, exposed his game.

“I think getting to play all these new events, all these new players, it exposes things in your game that you might not have known were there.

“You take those things, you go back, and you try and fix those faults. I think that’s been huge for me all year.”

Tien plays the winner of Jacob Fearnley and Andrey Rublev in the second round of the Paris Masters.

What Learner Tien told Ryan Harrison at the Paris Masters

Tien gaining seeded entry into the Australian Open would be huge for the his chances of going deep in the tournament.

The star achieved his breakout tournament at the 2025 event, where he upset Daniil Medvedev in the second round.

Despite his serious chance of cracking the top 32 before the Australian Open, the star does not have that on his mind at the Paris Masters.

Fellow American pro Ryan Harrison shared a conversation he had with Tien while on broadcasting duties for Sky Sports Tennis.

“I asked him what his goals were for 2026 and he said, ‘Look, we’re still in 2025!’, he knows that he’s still got a lot of tournaments left to play this year and he’s still not giving up any hope just yet on finishing this year with a good run somewhere.”

Tien has already risen to World No. 37 in the live rankings after his Paris Masters victory against Borges.
