She bageled the first set, lost the second, but Maria Kirilenko stormed back in the third to defeat Alberta Brianti 6-0 4-6 6-2 to get her PTT Pattaya Open campaign up and running on Monday.

The Russian has claimed three titles already in Asia – in Beijing, Kolkata and Seoul – and is seeking a fourth despite being part of a strong field in Thailand.

“I always like to come back to Asia,” said the No.3 seed, who had a pretty sluggish start to the year in Australia, losing in the first round in Sydney and in the second round of the Australian Open.

“The people are very nice and friendly and I always feel welcome here. I enjoy playing in such a good atmosphere.”

The main threats to Kirilneko’s pursuit of her sixth career title are world No.3 Vera Zvonareva and former No.1 Ana Ivanovic, who contest their first round matches later today.
