Because of Friday’s rain, both the sixth-seeded Russian and the fifth-seeded Spaniard had to play their quarter-finals on Saturday morning – Kirilenko seeing off another Spaniard, Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, 6-1 3-6 6-0 and Suarez Navarro overcoming Tatjana Malek 6-4 6-0.

The pair then came back on court with Kirilenko seemingly feeling the effects of her earlier exertions as she dropped the first set 6-4. However she stormed back in style, sealing a place in the final with a 4-6 6-1 6-2 win.

There she will face world number 61 Roberta Vinci, who came overcame a poor start in her all-Italian tie against Francesca Schiavone to win 0-6 7-6 (7/2) 6-4.
