Katie Boulter has never truly flourished on clay, but she’s been given a huge opportunity at the upcoming Open de Rouen.

Boulter lost in the first round of the Linz Open, which marked her first foray into the 2026 clay court season.

The British star is on the cusp of the WTA Tour top 50 again following an impressive run of form at the start of the year, which brought a tournament victory at the Ostrava Open.

Her next clay court event, at Open de Rouen, gives her an excellent opportunity to climb the rankings even more.

Katie Boulter gifted major opportunity at Open de Rouen

Open de Rouen takes place at the same time as the Women’s Stuttgart Open, which means its entry list is significantly weaker.

Marta Kostyuk, who is currently the world number 27, will be the number one seed at the French tournament.

What is stopping Katie Boulter from staying in the WTA top 20?

“A fantastic player, was already in the top 20, and she has unfortunately – we have talked about it so many times on our podcast – unfortunately, she just has the yips.”

Andrea Petkovic on the ‘Petkovic Becker’ podcast.

While the likes of Sorana Cirstea, Hailey Baptiste, and Janice Tjen are playing the event, Boulter should be confident of a lengthy run at the very least.

The British star plays a qualifier or a lucky loser in round one, while her biggest competitors in her section of the draw are Cirstea and Elisabetta Cocciaretto.

With no ranking points to defend, Boulter could enjoy a very lucrative time at the WTA 250 tournament in France.

Katie Boulter could play a Grand Slam champion in round three

Despite the lack of top ranked players at the French event, Boulter could be lined up against the 2017 US Open champion in Rouen.

Sloane Stephens has been awarded a wild card for Open de Rouen and she could play Boulter in the third round.

Stephens will begin her campaign against a qualifier or lucky loser, with a likely match against Cocciaretto on the horizon for the winner.

The two women have been stalwarts on the WTA Tour over the last decade, but they are yet to play a match against each other.

Stephens is also set to play doubles, alongside Katie Volynets, and they will play Iryna Shymanovich and Maria Kozyreva in round one.
