On paper, Coco Gauff will head into tomorrow’s Wimbledon semi-final as the overwhelming favourite against Karolina Muchova.
After all, with such a huge lead in their head-to-head, it seems clear that the American has something that disturbs the blistering pace and remarkable variety of the 29-year-old.
And yet, it almost feels impossible to assure victory for Coco Gauff, given just how unpredictable she has been over the past few years.
For all her immense talent and hard work, there is also a constant fear that she might suddenly suffer from serving or forehand issues once again.
Muchova will be hoping that something can unsettle the two-time major champion, having recently discussed why she thinks she suffers so badly against her.
Karolina Muchova discusses her terrible head-to-head record against Coco Gauff
Speaking at her press conference following yesterday’s hugely impressive win over Naomi Osaka, Muchova was asked about the one-sided nature of her record against Gauff.
Seeking to explain this phenomenon, she admitted: “Well, she is just, like, a great athlete overall. One of the best in the world, in our sport. It was tough to play against her. I’m happy we have 0-0 on the grass. That’s a bit better balance for me there.
How long will it take for Coco Gauff to complete the career Grand Slam?
“Yeah, I mean, she gives you a lot of balls back. She has a lot of weapons. She is a big fighter, which as well gives a lot of, yeah, things to her game to make it awkward for me.”
Gauff has admitted even she’s been surprised by her run at Wimbledon this year, having never even made it past the fourth round in previous years.
And yet, Andy Roddick has now admitted that Gauff amazes him with what she continues to exhibit on the court, having previously predicted her to lose to Jessica Pegula.
Karolina Muchova hoping to beat her third Grand Slam champion at this year’s Wimbledon
Whilst Gauff has endured a tough run at Wimbledon this year, Muchova’s has hardly been easier.
And, in facing the 21-year-old next, she will have to overcome a third former Grand Slam champion if she is to make it into the final.
Who will win the women’s Wimbledon title this year?

Having breezed through her opening three rounds, her first real task came against Barbora Krejčíková in the round of 16. She won that clash against the 2024 Wimbledon champion across three gruelling sets, before beating Osaka most recently, a four-time major winner.
Now, Gauff represents yet another huge roadblock standing between Muchova and her own little slice of history.
