Karlovic stumbles in Metz

The top-seeded Croatian was no match for his Spanish opponent, falling to a 6-3 7-6 (6/3) loss in the second round.

Former world number one Moya has won all four of his meetings with Karlovic, and will now face fifth seed Dmitry Tursunov in the last eight after the Russian beat Argentina’s Jose Acasuso 6-2 6-2.

In Wednesday’s other second-round encounter, Serbia’s Janko Tipsarevic ousted Ernests Gulbis of Latvia 6-4 6-4.

The first round was also completed on Wednesday with one seed advancing and another falling.

Seventh seed Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic was a 6-3 6-3 winner over France’s Julien Benneteau, but sixth-seeded Italian Andreas Seppi was beaten by French qualifier Adrian Mannarino 6-4 6-2.

Wednesday’s other first-round winners were South African qualifier Rik de Voest, who defeated Frenchman Arnaud Clement 4-6 6-2 7-5, and France’s Michael Llodra, who won a marathon first-set tiebreaker en route to a 7-6 (13/11) 6-7 (6/8) 6-3 victory over Spaniard Feliciano Lopez.
