Juan Carlos Ferrero has given his verdict on whether tennis needs a third challenger to unsettle Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.
It is a notion that has been emphasised by many within the sport, who argue that this duopoly can, and already is, getting quite tiresome.
After all, whilst they have already had some famous battles against one another, the fact that no other man has won a major title in the last eight, or even really come close is startling.
Not to mention that Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have now met in the final of the last three Grand Slams too.
However, despite all this fanfare, it still seemed a strange question to put to Juan Carlos Ferrero.
Juan Carlos Ferrero on whether tennis needs another male challenger
Asked if he felt men’s tennis needed a third, Novak Djokovic-esque challenger to upset this two-man domination, just after Alcaraz had lifted the US Open title, he admitted: “I don’t know. I mean, it’s tough to say.
“I think, if we have more players fighting for the big titles, I think it’s gonna be more entertaining. For us, it’s gonna be worse, because we have to mix the tournaments.
“But yeah, it’s always welcome, you know, all the players that rise and play at a high level, and I think people will. I think people learn from these kinds of matches. They know where the level is and where they have to go.
“So for sure they’re gonna try.”
Just last month, John McEnroe named the American he felt could challenge Alcaraz and Sinner.
Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner’s Grand Slam domination
It seems strange to think that, as the Big Three’s influence waned, there were fears about who might take their place.
And now, we’re right back where we started, with two superstars dominating men’s tennis.

The sport is cyclical like that, and therefore it is expected that there will be another group of challengers that rise to compete, eventually.
However, it has now been two years since a man other than Alcaraz and Sinner has won a major title, having split all eight between them across 2025 and 2024.
What’s even more worrying is that, when including Novak Djokovic in this domination, the last man outside that trio to win a major was the now-retired Rafael Nadal in 2022.
