Novak Djokovic’s exit from Roland Garros has still not quite been processed.

After all, not only did it mark a breakthrough moment for Joao Fonseca, but it has seemingly blown a draw that was already tough to predict even wider open.

John McEnroe was one of many pundits left stunned by the result; however, his post-match analysis has delivered a different kind of surprise.

He has now outlined what the Serbian did even before his Roland Garros showdown against Joao Fonseca had even begun, explaining how that truly shocked him.

John McEnroe left shocked by Novak Djokovic’s Roland Garros decision

Chatting with TNT Sports, the American pundit was once again reviewing Novak Djokovic’s dramatic five-set exit at the hands of this talented teenager.

However, whilst McEnroe had praised both players for playing their part in such a thrilling match, he did question one decision made by the 24-time Grand Slam champion which could have played a part in his defeat.

How many Grand Slam titles will Joao Fonseca win in his career?

What a match!

He suggested: “I’m still surprised with Novak [requesting a day-session match]. He said he didn’t sleep well after the first-round match.

“That was pretty shocking. I’m still surprised he risked going out there in this heat! I know he’s fitter in the heat and deals with it better than Sinner, but that’s still funny to risk.”

There were worrying signs for Djokovic during that match too, which seem to validate McEnroe’s theory even more.

John McEnroe discusses Alexander Zverev being the new Roland Garros favourite

Then, later on, McEnroe also discussed Alexander Zverev’s chances of creating personal history here in Paris, as the new outright favourite to win the title.

He argued: “I think the main question is how he’s going to handle the pressure all of a sudden.

”First of all, he was the guy that was the best player never to win a major.

”That was getting in his head, so that was bugging him. But now he doesn’t have to deal with Djokovic, Sinner and [Carlos] Alcaraz.

”So if he doesn’t win it this time, I don’t know whether he’s ever going to win it. So there’s more pressure there.

”He was up a break in the third set last night, and maybe you should have won that in three sets. But nonetheless, I think he’s young enough to bounce back.

”He’s been there and done that, so I don’t believe that’s going to affect him.”

Andy Roddick has now predicted Zverev to win Roland Garros, but this is exactly the kind of new pressure that McEnroe references.
