Casper Ruud is one of tennis’ most calm and collected individuals, and deservedly garners praise for his approach to the sport.
After all, where others shout and smash rackets, he prefers to remain cool.
Yesterday, in his Roland Garros loss to Joao Fonseca, many might have forgiven him for taking his frustration out on his equipment, though.
After all, with how the draw has opened up with losses for Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic, this tournament represents a huge opportunity for a new champion.
Which player do you want to see win their first Grand Slam at Roland Garros?
Alexander Zverev is the favourite…
Given Casper Ruud is a two-time finalist here, many tipped him to take advantage. And yet, he was disappointingly outmatched by his 19-year-old opponent.
Despite the frustrating nature of his exit, the Norwegian managed to limit his frustration to a sole complaint to the chair umpire.
John McEnroe overheard Casper Ruud complain to the chair umpire during match
The nature of his frustration was so minute that John McEnroe, speaking on TNT Sports’ live broadcast, was only barely able to catch it.
However, he did, and relayed to fans: “Ruud is asking if he can move that sponsor box back because it’s getting in the way of his backhand; he needs some more room.
“I think I heard Ruud complained to the umpire at the changeover that player safety is more important than the sponsors. He’s got that right.”
This comes not long after Roland Garros had to release a statement claiming that they would make the necessary changes to prioritise player safety after players tripped up on these advertising blocks at the back of smaller courts.
It seems that, even with the seemingly unlimited space that Philippe Chatrier offers, players are still not safe from these poorly placed advertisements.
Casper Ruud praises Joao Fonseca’s level after their match
Despite this mid-match frustration, as well as one moment of controversy with the electronic line calling, Ruud remained magnanimous afterwards.
Speaking about Fonseca in his post-match media obligations, he had only positive words for the Brazilian sensation, admitting: “I expected a tough match, and that’s exactly what happened.
How many Grand Slam titles will Joao Fonseca win in his career?
What a match!
“He doesn’t have many weaknesses in his game. He has already beaten many great players, including Novak Djokovic a few days ago. His game is really impressive.”
Fonseca will now face Jakub Mensik for a spot in the Roland Garros semi-final.
Meanwhile, for Ruud, many are wondering whether he will ever get a chance as good as this to win a Grand Slam again.
