Joao Fonseca has reacted to his win over Novak Djokovic at Roland Garros on social media.

Fonseca made history against Djokovic after becoming just the second player to beat the 24-time Grand Slam champion from two sets down at a major following his 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5 victory.

This confirmed that there will be a new Grand Slam champion at this year’s Roland Garros, but Fonseca is trying not to get ahead of himself.

Fonseca and Djokovic had a warm embrace at the net after their match in Paris, and the Brazilian has now sent a message on social media to his opponent.

This was the first time that Fonseca had played Djokovic, and his win over the Serbian means that the 19-year-old is now into the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time.

After beating Djokovic in Paris, Fonseca described it as ‘an honor’ in a heartfelt message on his Instagram.

Fonseca wrote, “Goosebumps. An honor and a dream come true to share the court with a legend like @djokernole for the first time.

“Today I left everything out there on the court and enjoyed every single second. Keep believing!”

Fonseca’s victory means that it is the first time that Djokovic has lost in the third round of Roland Garros since 2009.

What a match!

John Isner reacts after Joao Fonseca mentions him on court

It was unclear who was going to win the four hour and 53 minute match right until the last point, as Fonseca faced a break point when serving for the match.

However, Fonseca responded by hitting three aces to seal victory over Djokovic, and in his on-court interview he compared himself to John Isner, who has hit the most aces in tennis history.

“I guess I just believed I could do aces,” said Fonseca. “I felt like John Isner! It was crazy, I never did that before. I was just super happy that I could finish like this.”

Isner has since reacted to these comments on X (formerly known as Twitter), “That’s high praise from this young stud.”

Fonseca will now look ahead to his first fourth round match at a Grand Slam, where he will play two-time former Roland Garros finalist Casper Ruud.

This will be a first-time meeting between Fonseca and Ruud, as they both look to recover from their respective five set matches.
