Joao Fonseca has withdrawn from the Hamburg Open after suffering a wrist injury.

The Brazilian, who has emerged as one of the brightest young talents on the ATP Tour, had been expected to play at the ATP 500 event, which began on Sunday.

However, injury has forced Fonseca to withdraw from the event and he is set to make his return to competitive play at Roland Garros.

Joao Fonseca’s message after withdrawing from the Hamburg Open

“Hey, everyone,” Fonseca said in a post on Instagram. “Just wanted to let you know that I won’t be able to play at Hamburg Open this year.

“I’ve been experiencing some slight discomfort in my right wrist since I arrived.

“Together with my team, I’ve decided it’s best to withdraw as a precaution.

“Also, I want to thank the tournament for all their support and hospitality. See you all at Roland Garros!”

Fonseca’s withdrawal will come as a great disappointment to any Brazilian fans who were hoping to witness their starlet compete in Hamburg.

However, with Fonseca’s physical fitness a concern, withdrawing from the event is clearly the right decision.

Fonseca cannot run the risk of further injuring his wrist in Rome and jeopardising his Roland Garros campaign.
