Joao Fonseca has withdrawn from the Hamburg Open after suffering a wrist injury.
The Brazilian, who has emerged as one of the brightest young talents on the ATP Tour, had been expected to play at the ATP 500 event, which began on Sunday.
However, injury has forced Fonseca to withdraw from the event and he is set to make his return to competitive play at Roland Garros.
Are Joao Fonseca’s fans good for tennis? 😬
Fonseca has since issued a statement on social media, detailing his decision-making processes prior to withdrawing from the German event.
Joao Fonseca’s message after withdrawing from the Hamburg Open
“Hey, everyone,” Fonseca said in a post on Instagram. “Just wanted to let you know that I won’t be able to play at Hamburg Open this year.
“I’ve been experiencing some slight discomfort in my right wrist since I arrived.

“Together with my team, I’ve decided it’s best to withdraw as a precaution.
“Also, I want to thank the tournament for all their support and hospitality. See you all at Roland Garros!”
Fonseca’s withdrawal will come as a great disappointment to any Brazilian fans who were hoping to witness their starlet compete in Hamburg.
However, with Fonseca’s physical fitness a concern, withdrawing from the event is clearly the right decision.
Fonseca cannot run the risk of further injuring his wrist in Rome and jeopardising his Roland Garros campaign.

How did Joao Fonseca perform at the 2025 French Open?
Last year, Joao Fonseca made his debut at Roland Garros.
The Brazilian, then 18 years old, won on debut, defeating former world number six Hubert Hurkacz 6-2, 6-4, 6-2.
Fonseca continued to impress in the second round, beating French wildcard Pierre Hugues-Herbert 7-6, 7-6, 6-4 in the French capital.
Fonseca’s run in Paris came to an end against Jack Draper in the third round. Draper, the fifth seed, defeated Fonseca 6-2, 6-4, 6-2.

“Joao has caught the attention of the players and the fans. Today my experience came through,” Draper said after defeating the Brazilian, as per BBC Sport.
“How old is he, 18? Pretty impressive,” the Briton later added.
“I think it’s only going to go up for him. I think it’s going to be scary what he’s going to be able to achieve.”
Draper went on to lose in the very next round to Alexander Bublik, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.
