Joao Fonseca’s clay-court campaign has been an unpredictable one, despite having reinforced his love for the surface earlier this year.
And, in an effort to get additional reps on the dirt, he was one of few top players to have opted to play another tournament after the Italian Open, right before Roland Garros got underway.
He joined stars like Alex de Minaur and Ben Shelton in the Hamburg Open draw and will have been quietly confident of challenging for the title too.
Alas, that opportunity has been cruelly snatched away from him, and Joao Fonseca now faces a worrying race against time ahead of the second Grand Slam of the season.
Hamburg Open release statement confirming Joao Fonseca’s injury
This comes after the Hamburg Open released a statement confirming that the Brazilian talent had withdrawn from the event, just days before he was scheduled to play his opening-round match against Yannick Hanfmann.
They wrote: “The Brazilian tennis player João Fonseca will not be competing in this year’s Bitpanda Hamburg Open.
Joao Fonseca will be the man to unsettle Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner’s duopoly over men’s tennis – Prove us wrong!
“After arriving in Hamburg, the 19-year-old player felt a slight discomfort in his right wrist. In consultation with his team, he has decided to withdraw from the tournament as a precaution.”
Fonseca, then taking to his own social media, echoed that notion, citing that same ‘slight discomfort’ in the right wrist.
Given how feared and famed his forehand already is, any potential issue that inhibits it will spark huge worry.
Even Carlos Alcaraz has praised Fonseca’s forehand recently, to reinforce that notion.
Joao Fonseca could miss big opportunity at Roland Garros
Whilst this decision does only seem precautionary, it is worrying to consider what impact this injury might have on his chances of success at Roland Garros.
After all, this year it really feels like there is an opportunity for a few lesser-known talents to shine in the French capital, given how the event seems to be shaping up.
Can anyone now stop Jannik Sinner from winning Roland Garros after Carlos Alcaraz’s withdrawal?
If yes, who?
Jannik Sinner is the obvious favourite to claim the title, but with Alcaraz having been forced to withdraw, that blows one half of the draw wide open.
Elsewhere, other stars like Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic will head to Paris in unpredictable form, having both suffered surprise early exits in Rome. The same could certainly happen again at Roland Garros.
So, if Fonseca were not to be at full capacity, it would be a shame to see him miss out on this opportunity to enjoy his best-ever run at a Grand Slam.
