World No. 13 Jennifer Brady defeated Anastasija Sevastova in straight sets to progress to the second round of the 2021 French Open.
The 2021 Australian Open finalist defeated the Latvian 6-3 6-3 in the opening round.
The 26-year-old American lost her opening service game, before breaking back immediately. Brady then secured a decisive break at 4-3 and served out in style to take the first set 6-3.
Brady raced into a 2-0 lead in set two with some quality, aggressive tennis. At 2-1, Sevastova couldn’t convert three break point opportunities and it proved costly as Brady continued to fire forehand winners.
Brady then broke the 31-year-old Latvian at 5-3 in the second set and sealed victory.
She won an impressive 71% of first serve points and saved seven of the eight break points she faced. The American hit 21 winners and 20 unforced errors, with the forehand in particular bringing a lot of success.
The world No. 13 will face 24-year-old Fino Ferro in the second round.
Brady has made a few changes this clay season, most notably swapping coaches. She parted ways with Michael Geserer and added Brad Stine to her team.
