Jelena Ostapenko advanced to the Qatar Open quarter-finals on Wednesday after defeating Camila Osorio.

Ostapenko’s dominance at the tournament continued, as she dropped just four games on her way to defeating the Philippine Women’s Open champion 6-3, 6-1.

Do you think women should play best-of-five set matches?

The 2017 French Open champion has looked at home so far in Qatar, losing just one set in her first three matches at this year’s event.

And Ostapenko’s latest win over Osorio secured her place in the Qatar Open history books.

Jelena Ostapenko has now won the most matches in Qatar Open Women’s Singles history

As per statisticians OptaAce, Jelena Ostapenko has 23 wins at the Qatar Open, the most of any player at this event since the tournament was first created in 2001.

The Latvian star has surpassed Victoria Azarenka and Petra Kvitova, who have both won 22 matches at the event. Azarenka and Kvitova – like Ostapenko – are Grand Slam champions.

Azarenka is a two-time Qatar Open champion, having won titles in 2012 and 2013. Petra Kvitova is also a two-time champion, capturing titles in 2018 and 2021.

Ostapenko made her debut at the event in 2016, reaching the final before losing to Carla Suarez Navarro, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Ostapenko would have to wait nine years to reach the final again. In 2025, the Latvian lost in the championship match to Amanda Anisimova.

After defeating Ostapenko in last year’s final, Anisimova said: “There’s been a lot of hard work, a lot of tears and a lot of good moments.

“With tennis, you kind of experience it all, but that’s also why I love it. There have been a lot of challenges the last few weeks. I’m very proud of myself and happy with how I’ve dealt with them.”

Can Ostapenko go one better in 2026?

With Coco Gauff now absent from her section of the draw, Ostapenko has a unique opportunity to take advantage.

If Ostapenko defeats Elisabetta Cocciaretto in the next round, she will face Victoria Mboko, Elena Rybakina or Qinwen Zheng in the semi-finals.

Ostapenko will likely play Iga Swiatek or Elina Svitolina if she reaches the Qatar Open final for a third time.
