Jaume Munar shares the ‘biggest mistake’ he made vs Alexander Zverev which lost him their Davis Cup match

Jaume Munar may have lost his match to Alexander Zverev yesterday, but it was still Spain who prevailed to reach another Davis Cup final.

They will now be rewarded with the unenviable task of trying to thwart the two-time defending champions Italy, who breezed past Belgium to reach a third-straight final.

It’s sad that both Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner were forced to pull out of the event, given how 2025 could have been perfectly concluded with yet another showdown between these two great rivals.

Alas, it is now down to their replacements to get the job done, and Munar will be keen to improve upon the standard he set yesterday.

Although he was defeated in straight sets, it feels like the Spaniard has been quite critical of himself in what was a battling defeat.

After all, both sets went to a tiebreak, where Alexander Zverev notably thrives.

To lose in that fashion is far from an embarrassment, and yet, assessing the match, Munar admitted: “Yeah, well, first of all, it was a tough match mentally. I didn’t feel like the level of the match was so high. We were serving good. I couldn’t play my best tennis, especially at the tiebreaks from the baseline. I couldn’t make it.

“If I have to be honest, the biggest mistake or the biggest chance I had was when I was a break up in the second, I had the feeling that I was leading the match. Then suddenly, two easy mistakes.

“As you saw, a couple of too many mistakes on the second tiebreak. That’s pretty much the match today. Really looking forward to the doubles. Nothing else.”

Whilst this has been an intriguing iteration of the event, it has been somewhat overshadowed by many calling for the Davis Cup to make a key change that could revolutionise the tournament.

Spain v Italy in the Davis Cup final

If somebody had told the average tennis fan a month ago that we would be treated to a Spain vs Italy match-up in the final of the Davis Cup, it would have commanded huge interest.

The Davis Cup has to make a change… which is your preference?

After all, we would seemingly have been guaranteed another Alcaraz and Sinner clash on a new stage.

Sadly, with the former picking up a hamstring injury and the latter opting to skip this year’s tournament, it will be a clash severely weakened by their absence.

However, Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Cobolli have more than stepped up for the Italians and would pose a huge threat to any opponent they face.

Meanwhile, Munar remains in form, coming off the back of a great season, and is supported by Pablo Carreno Busta.

Naturally, the Italians will be heavy favourites, regardless of whether Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti are there or not.

One thing is for sure though; fans of this event will be guaranteed fireworks when these nations meet later today.
