Jannik Sinner is looking to make tennis history in Madrid.

If the Italian captures the Madrid title for the first time in his career, he would become the first player in tennis history to win five consecutive Masters 1000 titles.

Sinner recently won his fourth consecutive Masters 1000 title at the Monte Carlo Masters.

Sinner’s chances of triumphing in Madrid received a boost following the withdrawals of both Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic.

The 24-year-old has received yet another boost following the release of the Madrid Open draw.

Jannik Sinner’s positive Madrid Open draw

As the number one seed, Sinner has received a bye through to the second round.

From there, the Italian will face a qualifier, before meeting Alex Michelsen or Gabriel Diallo in the third round.

Tommy Paul likely awaits Sinner in the fourth round, while Alex de Minaur – who has a 0-13 record against Sinner – could be his opponent in the quarter-finals.

In the last four, Sinner could face either Ben Shelton, Valentin Vacherot, Lorenzo Musetti or Arthur Fils.

Speaking of Fils, the Frenchman may be the most likely challenger to Jannik Sinner’s Madrid title charge.

The Frenchman has been in fine form since returning from a long-term injury in February, and recently won the biggest title of his career in Barcelona.

With that being said, Sinner will feel extremely confident of winning the title after viewing his draw.

Sinner’s potential opponents before the final have only managed two total wins against him.

Tommy Paul defeated Sinner at the 2022 Eastbourne Open and Shelton beat the Italian at the 2023 Shanghai Masters.

Since that victory, Shelton has lost nine consecutive matches to Sinner.

Jannik Sinner’s last appearance in Madrid

Sinner last appeared at the Madrid Open in 2024, reaching the quarter-finals.

The Italian, who is yet to win the event, defeated Lorenzo Sonego, Pavel Kotov and Karen Khachanov on his way to the last eight.

However, a hip injury prevented Sinner from continuing his run in Spain.

“Very sad to have to withdraw from my next match here in Madrid,” Sinner said in a post on X.

“My hip has been bothering me this week and has slowly been getting more painful.

“Taking the advice from the doctors we decided it’s best to not play further and make it worse.”
