Coco Gauff has turned to a biomechanics specialist to assist with her wayward recent form after parting ways with coach Matt Daly.

The French Open champion has split with coach Matt Daly just four days before the US Open and hired Gavin MacMillan. Daly had worked with Gauff since September 2024.

MacMillan, who had previously helped Aryna Sabalenka to correct her serve, will likely be working towards a similar goal with Gauff.

The American has struggled with her serve recently, encapsulated by her 23 double faults against Danielle Collins at the Canadian Open.

Darren Cahill, who is the coach of ATP world number one Jannik Sinner, has weighed in on Gauff’s hiring of MacMillan.

Darren Cahill says ‘this could be a really good relationship’

Darren Cahill, the current coach of Jannik Sinner, is understandably an authority when it comes to identifying potentially positive player-coach relationships in tennis.

After all, Cahill has enjoyed successful periods coaching some of the sport’s greats, helping Lleyton Hewitt become the second youngest player ever to be ranked world number one.

He also assisted Andre Agassi in becoming the oldest ever world number one.

Since being hired by Jannik Sinner in 2022, Cahill has helped guide the Italian to four Grand Slam titles.

On Wednesday Cahill spoke about Gauff’s new coach on air during ESPN’s tennis coverage. He pinpointed Gavin MacMillan’s biomechanics expertise, while noting the potential for Gauff and MacMillan’s relationship to be a positive one.

After Gauff’s coaching change was reported on Wednesday by ESPN, Cahill said: “A lot of things add up and this could be a really good relationship.

“He’s very thorough ….I’ve spoken to him many, many times before and the fact that he’s got experience with different athletes from different sports, both male and female, he uses the new technology, he goes to the video a lot, really breaks down the biomechanics.”

Rick Macci previously recommended that Coco Gauff hire a ‘biomechanics-proven’ coach

Rick Macci, the former coach of Serena and Venus Williams, previously suggested that the employment of a coach with knowledge of biomechanics would help Gauff correct her serve. Macci also recently said Gauff is at a ‘career crossroads‘ with her forehand and serve.

Gauff has proceeded to do so just four days later.

On August 16, Macci said on X [Twitter]: “Coco is the one delivering the mail, but it is not her fault with a second serve that we see bail.

This amazing athlete needs right now to flip the script with a science-based approach from a biomechanics PhD-proven coach.

This has been going on for many years once it is fixed you eliminate the fears.”
