Jannik Sinner defeated Cameron Norrie, 6-2, 7-5, in the fourth round of the Madrid Open.

The Italian made light work of Norrie as he eased past the British number one in straight sets.

They were made to play first on Tuesday, an interesting decision to say the least.

Jannik Sinner calls for the Madrid Open to change their schedule

“It was quite unusual for me. I don’t know the last time I played at 11,” he said.

“For me, it doesn’t matter what time, I tried to do my best.

“It was a question if me or [Rafa] Jodar plays at 4, but I think it’s right that he plays at 4.

“He finished very late, and at the same time, I feel like we need to make some adjustments with scheduling out of the day.

“Two matches from 8pm are very late, even though you have one day in between. It’s very late.

“You finish at 1:30 and need to eat and have treatment. It’s very late.

“We try to adapt ourselves and bodies and minds.”

19-year-old Rafael Jodar finished his third-round match well after midnight on Sunday.

Sinner believes change is needed, but was happy with his performance nevertheless.

“We know each other quite well. We practiced quite a lot in the last tournaments. We both knew what to expect. I felt like I was serving quite well today in important moments,” he said.

“This surface is very different from all the other surfaces, so sometimes it’s hard to get the right feedback, and you feel like you are not playing your best.

“But from the outside it seems that you are, and sometimes it’s the opposite.

“But I am happy to be here in the quarters again. It’s a tournament I have not played a lot, so it means a lot to me.”

Sinner has never reached the semi-finals of the Madrid Open, coming closest back in 2024 when he withdrew ahead of his quarter-final match.

Only time will tell if he can go one step further in 2026.

Naomi Broady questions Jannik Sinner’s fitness despite comfortable win

During Sky Sports’ post-match coverage, former British tennis star Naomi Broady questioned whether Sinner was 100% fit during his 6-2, 7-5 win.

“I still don’t think he seemed 100% today,” said Broady.

“I thought it seemed he was moving quite slowly, especially in the first set.

“I would not put it down to tiredness.

“Yes, it was an early match time for him, and I can’t remember the last time he played at 11am.

“He did not seem quite at 100%, although Cam [Norrie] did.”

Jannik Sinner’s Masters 1000 streak

No player has ever won five consecutive Masters 1000 events, but Sinner is now just three wins away from doing just that.

Sinner won’t want to get ahead of himself, though, and will first turn his attention to the quarter-finals, and a match with either Jodar or Czechia’s Vit Kopriva.
