Jannik Sinner is the champion in Rome, having finally captured the last Masters 1000 title that was missing from his collection.
In winning this title, he has now become the youngest player in history to have completed the set at this level, eclipsing Novak Djokovic’s achievement at seven years younger.
It’s a true testament to his ongoing dominance that he has won every Masters 1000 event this year, and with Carlos Alcaraz ruled out of Roland Garros, it really feels like nobody will be able to stop him from claiming that title as well.
Speaking afterwards, the Italian was understandably emotional as he discussed how it felt to win in front of his home crowd.
What Jannik Sinner said after winning the Italian Open
As usual, he began by congratulating his opponent, with Casper Ruud having fought hard despite losing in straight sets.
Jannik Sinner stated: “Casper, first of all, congrats to you and, of course, your whole team.
“It’s great to see you back playing the highest level of our sport. Now, of course, the most important tournament for you personally is coming up. So I wish you only the best, and I’m very happy for you.
“Also, things are going very well off the court, for you and your fiancé, and I wish you only the best for your future.”
And, whilst he naturally then turned his attention to his team, he actually focused on his physical trainers, adding: “To the guys, thank you. Thank you so much for everything you’re doing for me.
“I know a very important part is, is, is on court, but I would like to thank also my physical trainers. For putting my body, week after week, in the best possible shape, and being ready for this kind of result.”
Once again, and as referenced earlier, Sinner made even more history with his latest win. He truly is a freak of nature and is only just getting started.
Jamie Murray full of praise for history-maker Jannik Sinner
Unsurprisingly, the many pundits on Sky Sports were all united in their collective amazement when discussing Sinner and what he continues to achieve.
His solo dominance over the ATP Tour is truly unlike anything we have really seen before, and Jamie Murray in particular was effusive in his praise.
“What a performance from Sinner, start to finish,” he began, before touching on the fact that the 24-year-old had just become only the second man in history to have won all nine Masters 1000 events with this latest Italian Open triumph.
Murray continued: “Solid after his first couple of games. I mean, what an achievement. 24 years old, to win all nine Masters series. The second person in history to do that after Djokovic.
Can anyone now stop Jannik Sinner from winning Roland Garros after Carlos Alcaraz’s withdrawal?
If yes, who?
“It’s incredible, incredible levels of performance that he’s had, to be so consistent, week to week. All the different surfaces, different conditions that you have to deal with on the tour.
“He’s so dominant. Just so impressive to watch.”
