Jannik Sinner responds when asked if he agrees with Wimbledon’s plans to expand the tournament

Wimbledon plans to become even bigger, and ATP number one Jannik Sinner thinks that makes sense “from a tennis point of view”.

Sinner was tasked with discussing the controversial topic after picking up his third win of this year’s tournament, having beaten Jenson Brooksby in round three.

The Italian is the defending champion at Wimbledon, for which the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC) has grand plans for expansion.

Its proposals include building 38 additional courts and an 8,000-seater stadium on the old Wimbledon Park Golf Course opposite the site.

Strongly against such plans, Save Wimbledon Park (SWP) held a protest outside the grounds earlier this week, with Sinner now sharing his perspective.

Jannik Sinner says Wimbledon expansion plans are good for tennis

When asked for his thoughts on the plans that include creating a new court and bringing qualifying from Roehampton to the site, he said: “Yeah, I think from a tennis point of view, it’s good.

“Obviously we know what’s around. And it’s not easy, because I also know that people are against because it’s a natural or a nice park where you can use in different ways.

“The site here is very big. There are lots of courts.

“If we watch Australian Open, Roland Garros, and US Open, the qualifying is always played in the same place.

“Here it’s different. But it’s also because grass is a different surface. When you use it, of course after you cannot play.

“There are also main draw matches in the beginning. It is tricky. I cannot comment on that because I’m not into this.

“I’m very neutral. I’ve seen the plans. If they make it, it’s going to be very big, as well. But I don’t want to comment on that.”

What is Jannik Sinner’s history at Wimbledon?

Of course, Sinner knows his way around Wimbledon at this stage, with the Italian now making his sixth main draw appearance at the event.

He made his debut at the All England Club in 2021, when he lost his opening match.

But he has more than made up for that early exit since then, reaching two quarterfinals and one semifinal before claiming the title in 2025.

After beating Carlos Alcaraz in last year’s final, he entered this year’s tournament with a fine 20-4 win-loss record.

The four-time Grand Slam champion has, of course, now improved upon that record, with qualifier Shintaro Mochizuki now awaiting in the round of 16.
