Jannik Sinner defeated Frances Tiafoe, 6-2, 6-2, to reach the Miami Open semifinals.

The Italian broke in the very first game and never looked back as he dismantled Tiafoe in just over an hour.

He’s now won 30 consecutive sets at the Masters 1000 level, a run stretching back to last year’s Paris Masters.

After the match, Sinner was asked to pick his favorite surface and conditions.

Jannik Sinner says indoor hard courts are his favorite

During Sky Sports’ post-match coverage, Tim Henman asked Sinner what his favorite surface is.

“I love hard court indoors,” he said.

“That, for me, is something where I feel the most comfortable.

“But I also know that to be a very-high-ranked player, you need to play all-around.

“So I’ve learned to play on the grass, the last two or three years a little bit better…. I did alright last year.

“So I can’t complain, and then, obviously, we’ll see how clay goes; it’s going to be very interesting to see.”

It’s no surprise that Sinner picked indoor hard courts as his favorite surface…

Sinner went unbeaten on indoor hard courts last year, winning the Vienna Open, Paris Masters, and the ATP Finals.

In fact, throughout his entire career, Sinner has won almost as many titles on indoor hard courts as he has outdoors.

An impressive record given how many more tournaments are played outdoors than indoors each year.

He might prefer playing indoors, but as Sinner mentioned, he has developed an all-around game that makes him dangerous on all surfaces.

Especially in Miami…

The world number two was pleased with his performance against Tiafoe, as he dropped just four games against the 28-year-old.

“Yesterday was a good training session, it was very warm, very hot, so not that long, but yeah, today, I felt definitely better,” said Sinner.

“I felt like I was serving quite well in the important moments.

“Maybe the key game was here when I was at 3-2, struggling to hold serve, happy about that.

“I thought he might be a bit tired, because he had tough matches here, a couple of three-setters, long matches, so I tried to make it physical in the beginning, which helped, for sure.

“I’m happy about today’s performance.”

Sinner was near-perfect on serve against Tiafoe, as he has been throughout the Miami Open.

If he can keep that up, he’s going to be tough to beat in the Sunshine State.

Annabel Croft says Jannik Sinner looks ‘a level above’ everyone else in Miami

During their post-match analysis, Annabel Croft agreed with Jonathan Overrend when he suggested Sinner was the ‘overwhelming favorite’ to win the Miami Open.

“No question about it, he’s laid down the mantle, and that’s quite a scary proposition for anyone taking him on court,” she said.

“To demolish an opponent like [Frances] Tiafoe, who is so dangerous, can be such a threat to any player with the weapons he brings on to court, but he totally took away all of those out there today; he was so clinical.

“The precision with the serving, the ace count, just motoring through every service game, taking care of business so efficiently.

“But what he did to Tiafoe’s return of serve, he stressed him right from the word go, gave him no breathing space at all.

“That depth on the return of serve, the depth on the groundstrokes, throwing in those little dropshots every now and then, out positioning him…

“There was so much to admire in what he put out in this match today; it was brilliant.

“He looks unstoppable, winning Indian Wells without dropping a set, now these matches here as well, he just looks a level above everybody out there.”

Croft thinks Sinner is a level above the competition, but who else could he meet in Miami?

Miami Open semifinals

Sinner will play either Francisco Cerundolo or Alexander Zverev in the semifinals.

The Italian leads Cerundolo 4-2 in their head-to-head, and Zverev, 7-4, in theirs.

If he can avoid an upset, he’d meet Jiri Lehecka or Arthur Fils in the final.

Looking at the draw, it’s hard to imagine anyone other than Sinner lifting the trophy on Sunday evening.

He won’t want to get ahead of himself, though, and will now focus on his semifinal match against Cerundolo or Zverev on Friday, March 27.
