Jannik Sinner defeated Alex Michelsen, 7-5, 7-6, to reach the Miami Open quarterfinals.

The Italian was made to work hard for his place in the last eight, as Michelsen pushed him close in Miami.

Sinner was down 5-2 in the second set, but fought back to maintain his perfect record at this year’s Miami Open (6-0 in sets).

“If I’m very honest, I’m not feeling perfectly.

“From yesterday to today, they are different conditions; playing at night is different from playing in the day. But look, I’m happy to fight my way through this one. It was a very tough match; he played some great tennis, so happy with how I handled the situation, especially in the second set.

“Tomorrow, a day off, is going to help me a lot. We try to have a good rhythm in the practice session and see how it goes.”

Sinner was then asked if his recent performances helped him regain confidence after losing to Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open.

“Semis in a Grand Slam is still an incredible result, you know?” said Sinner.

“I’m someone who is not over the moon when I win matches, and not someone who throws myself under the bus when I lose matches, it would not be fair.

“I just try to understand my game better, this comes also by playing, now a couple of years in a very high level of tennis, I know my way back, what to do.

“We try, of course, to improve.

“Today was good feedback.

“I know if I want to go far in this tournament, I need to improve a couple of things, but at the same time, quarters again here, a good result, and we’ll see how it goes before going on clay.”

Hearing Sinner still has gears to go through is bad news for the players remaining in the Miami Open draw, as he continues to deliver the goods in Florida.

Jannik Sinner extends Miami Open winning streak and edges closer to Sunshine Double

Sinner hasn’t lost a match in Miami since the 2023 final.

He’s won nine consecutive matches, picking up the 2024 title before reaching this year’s quarterfinals.

Jannik Sinner’s Miami Open unbeaten run

The world number two would love to extend that unbeaten run by a few more matches and pick up the title in Miami.

If he can, he’d become the first man to complete the Sunshine Double since Roger Federer in 2017.

Even his great rival, Carlos Alcaraz, the youngest man to complete the Career Grand Slam, hasn’t won Indian Wells and the Miami Open in the same year.
