Jannik Sinner defeated Frances Tiafoe, 6-2, 6-2, in the Miami Open quarterfinals.

The Italian made light work of Tiafoe, brushing him aside in just over an hour.

In Tiafoe’s defence, he was visibly tired throughout the match, having won a pair of three-setters en route to the Miami Open quarterfinals.

Can anyone stop Jannik Sinner from winning the Sunshine Double?

Recognising that Tiafoe was fatigued, Sinner shared his thoughts on the 28-year-old during his post-match press conference.

Jannik Sinner thinks Frances Tiafoe will be ‘tough’ to beat in 2026

“I think it’s normal [that Frances Tiafoe was tired],” said Sinner.

“He had tough matches. Long, long matches and playing under the heat, and then finishing later a couple of days ago.

“I had this in the back of my mind. I know how you feel. But at the same time, I try to play some good tennis, and I managed to do that, so I am seeing both sides a little bit.

“It’s trying to break him very early that helped me, so I wish him only the best.

“He is a player who is improving a lot lately.

“I think he is going to be a tough player to beat.”

Tiafoe endured a tricky 2025 campaign and finished the year ranked 30th in the world.

Determined to enjoy a better season in 2026, earlier this year, Tiafoe said he was excited about the future.

“I am around 30 right now. I am going to play a top four or five guy in the third round, so that excites me. It also excites me to have that hunger again and chase it a little bit,” he said.

Tiafoe has already shown positive signs in 2026, as he charges back up the rankings.

If Tiafoe can keep this up, there’s half a chance we will see him make his ATP Finals debut in November…

Tiafoe is scheduled to return to action next week at the Houston Open, on clay.

Will Jannik Sinner reach the Miami Open final?

Standing between Sinner and a place in the Miami Open final is Germany’s Alexander Zverev.

The German, like Sinner, eased into the semifinals.

Zverev is feeling confident and could be a real threat to Sinner’s ‘Sunshine Double’ dreams.

It is Sinner, however, who leads their head-to-head.

Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev’s head-to-head record

The Italian has won his last six matches against Zverev and beat him earlier this month at Indian Wells.

All signs point towards Sinner picking up win number seven and booking his place in Sunday’s final, but it would be dangerous to count Zverev out.

Sinner and Zverev will battle it out for a place in the Miami Open final on Friday, March 27.
