Jannik Sinner has helped Novak Djokovic overtake another Roger Federer record.

Djokovic is not playing at the Monte Carlo Masters this week after announcing his withdrawal from the tournament.

This has given other players an opportunity, including Felix Auger-Aliassime, who achieved his best result at the Monte Carlo Masters by reaching the quarterfinals.

However, Auger-Aliassime’s defeat to Sinner has confirmed that Djokovic will overtake one of Federer’s records.

Novak Djokovic will overtake a Roger Federer ranking record

Djokovic is the current world number four, with only Carlos Alcaraz, Sinner and Alexander Zverev ahead of him.

The Serbian is currently in his 859th week ranked inside the top five, which will equal Federer, who held the record on the ATP Tour.

However, with Djokovic not currently scheduled to compete until a couple of weeks’ time at the Madrid Open, it was unclear as to whether he would still be in the top five when he plays in the Spanish capital.

Only Auger-Aliassime and Alex de Minaur were able to overtake Djokovic before the Madrid Open, but neither player will now be able to do that.

Djokovic’s place in the top five for the next two weeks was confirmed after Auger-Aliassime was beaten by Sinner, meaning that he will now overtake Federer’s record of 859 weeks inside the top five.

De Minaur then also lost his quarterfinal to Valentin Vacherot, meaning that Djokovic will also remain inside the top four.

Both Auger-Aliassime and De Minaur are competing at the Barcelona Open next week, but they are too far behind Djokovic in the rankings to overtake him.

Novak Djokovic still has another Roger Federer ranking record he is yet to catch

Auger-Aliassime and De Minaur’s defeats mean that Djokovic now leads the records for most weeks as world number one, inside the top two, three, four and five.

However, there is one ranking record that Djokovic may have his eye on, as Federer still has the most weeks inside the top 10.

He could skip clay entirely…

Federer spent a total of 968 weeks inside the top 10 in his career, which is 31 ahead of Djokovic.

The earliest Djokovic will be able to overtake Federer’s top 10 record would be November 9, just a week before the season-ending ATP Finals.

Djokovic does not appear to be likely to drop out of the top 10 anytime soon, as he is currently 1,175 points ahead of world number 11 Alexander Bublik in the live rankings.

However, a lot will depend on how limited a schedule Djokovic plays, with 1,070 points to defend during the clay court season and a further 800 to defend at Wimbledon.
