Last year, he lost in the final to Carlos Alcaraz. This year, the Spaniard will be present to try and defend his crown, but it will likely only be his first or second event since returning from injury.

Expectations will be low.
Despite his constant hunger for more success, even after Sinner withdrew from the Canadian Open, he has also claimed that this is not what will matter to him when he is done.
He instead claimed: “I’m only 24 years old, it’s not easy to answer this question. Beyond the results achieved on the court, I would like people to remember me for the type of person I am and for the values that my parents have transmitted to me.
“Maybe someone also remembers me because they had fun watching my games.”

It feels like an age since we last got to see Alcaraz and Sinner do battle on the court.
Even before his injury hit, this year has not been one marked with the usual expected meetings between the two.

In 2025, they competed in three of the four Grand Slam finals, sharing them with two apiece.
Their only clash this year went the way of Sinner in the Monte Carlo Masters final.
This narrowed the gap between them on their head-to-head, which Alcaraz still leads with ten wins from 17 meetings.
It feels unlikely that we will see them add to this tally significantly between now and the end of the year.
