Jannik Sinner is enjoying one of the most dominant spells in recent ATP Tour history.

The Italian continued his imperious form on Saturday, defeating Sebastian Ofner 6-3, 6-4 in the Italian Open second round.

Sinner, who reclaimed the world number one spot from Carlos Alcaraz last month, is seeking to win a sixth consecutive Masters 1000 title in Rome.

With Carlos Alcaraz – Sinner’s main rival on the ATP Tour – unable to participate in the event, this outcome seems more than likely to occur.

The 24-year-old Italian has made a habit of making history with every passing match, and Saturday’s contest was no different.

Following his latest victory in Rome, Sinner has now entered rarefied air alongside Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic – two legends of the sport.

As per statisticians OptaAce, Sinner has won his 29th consecutive match at ATP Masters 1000 events.

Since the Masters 1000 format’s introduction in 1990, only Novak Djokovic has had a longer winning streak.

Remarkably, Djokovic has recorded two separate winning streaks at Masters 1000 events that eclipse Sinner’s current total, registering 30 and 31 consecutive victories at the Masters 1000 level during his career.

Sinner will look to win his 30th consecutive Masters 1000 match when he plays former Canadian Open champion Alexei Popyrin on Monday.

Sinner has a 2-1 record against the Australian, last defeating the 26-year-old at the 2026 Qatar Open.

Popyrin, the world number 60, has defeated Matteo Berrettini and Jakub Mensik in Rome so far.

“It’s been a very special tournament for me, starting with a wildcard back in the day,” Sinner said after defeating his Austrian opponent, as per BBC Sport.

“Every year when you come here you reflect a little bit.

“I’m very happy to be here. Let’s see what’s coming in the next round.”

Can anyone now stop Jannik Sinner from winning Roland Garros after Carlos Alcaraz’s withdrawal?

If yes, who?

Sinner is the firm favourite for the Italian Open title, and with the likes of Ben Shelton and Felix Auger-Aliassime suffering early losses, the Italian’s path to a first title in Rome has become more straightforward.

Sinner’s main challenger in Rome remains Alexander Zverev – the second seed and world number three.

However, should Sinner and Zverev meet in the final, the Italian will be the strong favourite. After all, Sinner has won his last nine matches against the German star.

The pair last played each other in the 2026 Madrid Open final. Sinner comfortably defeated Zverev 6-1, 6-2 in the Italian capital.
