Jannik Sinner gained comfortable passage into the third round of the Miami Open last night, winning his opening match with remarkable ease.
It was the very best of the 24-year-old, who gave Damir Džumhur no chance.
And yet, despite another supreme performance from the Indian Wells champion, who is getting tantalisingly close to completing the Sunshine Double, much of his post-match was dominated by Joao Fonseca.
After all, having played both Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz in the last two weeks, the teenage sensation compared the two, causing plenty of controversy.
What Joao Fonseca said about Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner
Fonseca explained what Alcaraz had that Sinner did not, in a blunt but fair assessment of their respective games.
However, this was not well received by fans of the former world number one, who accused the youngster of underplaying the talents of the reigning Wimbledon champion.
Will Joao Fonseca be the man to break up Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner’s dominance?
If not, who will be?
His comments were as follows: I think Alcaraz has more arsenal than Sinner.
“Sinner is more like a robot that just kills the ball and does everything perfect.
“Carlos, he can do everything. He can do with topspin, fire the ball, has good movement, goes to the net. It’s more difficult to understand the game.”
Jannik Sinner explains why he agrees with Joao Fonseca
Reacting to these comments whilst on the Tennis Channel desk after his latest win, Sinner agreed.
Despite many fans arguing that Fonseca’s claim was disrespectful, the Italian silenced those frustrations by explaining why he thought the Brazilian was actually correct.
He claimed: “Yeah, yeah, yeah, I saw, I mean, uh, he’s right, you know, is.
Who do you think will retire with more Grand Slam titles?
“I’m more the guy who is, but this, we know already, you know, I’m uh… It’s, I think, the perfect view, you know.
“And then coming from a player who has played against me the week before, and now Carlos here, this was the perfect explanation. So he’s an incredible talent. I wish him only the best.
“He’s playing an incredible high level of tennis. I believe he’s going to make huge steps forward, he has a very, very good team behind him, so also a very, very good family, it seems like, and that’s also very important, and yeah, I wish him only the best. I’m a big fan of him.”
