The Serbian third seed was taken to three sets by local favourite Sabine Lisicki before advancing 7-5 5-7 6-3.

Top seed Dinara Safina enjoyed a more comfortable victory, the Russian beating Slovakia’s Daniela Hantuchova 6-4 6-2.

Second seed Elena Dementieva was another winner in straight sets, the Olympic champion beating Agnes Szavay of Hungary 7-6 6-1.

Compatriot Svetlana Kuznetsova made it three Russians in the last eight after recovering from a set down to beat China’s Na Li 4-6 6-4 7-5.

Eight seed Agnieszka Radwanska also advanced with a 6-3 6-3 win over Tsvetana Pironkova but Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki, the seventh seed, was beaten by former Wimbledon finalist Marion Bartoli.
