Novak Djokovic was unable to win an 11th Australian Open title on Sunday, losing his first final in 11 attempts in Melbourne to Carlos Alcaraz.

After winning the first set 6-2, it seemed Djokovic was destined to capture that elusive 25th Grand Slam title. Unfortunately for fans of the Serbian star, he was unable to capitalise on his advantage, losing the contest 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5.

It was a disappointing result for Djokovic; however, he can be proud of the valiant performance he produced against a player 16 years his junior.

Can Carlos Alcaraz win MORE Grand Slams than Novak Djokovic? 🤔

Djokovic’s next opportunity to win a 25th Slam will be at the 2026 French Open, a tournament he has won three times.

Despite Djokovic’s previous success in Paris, Jamie Murray believes a different tournament represents the Serbian star’s best chance of capturing number 25.

Jamie Murray says Novak Djokovic’s best chance of winning a 25th Grand Slam is at Wimbledon

Jamie Murray, the brother of Andy Murray and a two-time Wimbledon Mixed Doubles champion, has discussed the possibility of Djokovic winning his 25th Grand Slam at the All England Club during TNT Sports’ post-final coverage.

Djokovic, a seven-time Wimbledon champion, last won the title in 2022. The Serbian star also reached the final in 2023, but lost to Carlos Alcaraz in five sets.

Speaking about Djokovic’s chances of winning an eighth title in London, Murray said: “Wimbledon, I would probably have said would have been his best chance. At the start of the season, I would have been ring fencing that as his best opportunity.

“But I am sure he will be disappointed not to have got over the line here, especially after his heroic effort of beating Sinner. He knows he is not going to be around forever and his level is slowly declining.

“I still think he had to beat Sinner. I don’t really care if he played 20 hours or 10 hours tennis. He still had to get past Sinner and Alcaraz and that is going to be the ultimate challenge for so many of these players over the next four or five years.

“If we want a new Slam winner, it’s how do we overcome those guys back to back and Novak unfortunately for him couldn’t do it. But I think Wimbledon he will be there and he will have another crack at it.”

Carlos Alcaraz says how he felt playing in front of Rafael Nadal

In a video posted on the Tennis Channel’s X account, Alcaraz discussed how he felt playing Novak and competing in front of Rafael Nadal – a player Alcaraz idolised during his younger years.

Alcaraz said: “Really special day for me. Honour to play the final of a Grand Slam against Novak – one of the greatest athletes of all time to be honest.

“I’ve been watching these guys since a little kid, so [to] be able to you know, achieve great things playing against them, and obviously Rafa in the stands means a lot.

“It’s been a really special day for me, for lifting a trophy. But also for having Rafa watching in the stands.”

Alcaraz will now look ahead to the next major tournament in Paris, where he will hope to win a third consecutive title.

Jannik Sinner, who was defeated by Novak Djokovic in Melbourne, will also be a major contender for the title. Sinner will hope to complete the Career Grand Slam in Paris and avenge his 2025 French Open final loss to Alcaraz.
