Jack Draper suffers ranking drop after defeat to Daniil Medvedev as new British number one is crowned

Jack Draper lost to Daniil Medvedev in the quarterfinals of Indian Wells.

In doing so, he failed to defend the 1,000 points he earned winning the title 12 months ago.

Ranked fourth in the world last year, Draper will now fall out of the top 20.

Who will have more Grand Slam titles when both are retired?

And surrender the British number-one ranking…

Just a year ago, many believed Draper was the biggest threat to Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.

In a few days, he’ll be ranked below Valentin Vacherot, a player few had even heard of last year.

Draper’s fall-off has been drastic, but not unexpected.

His level is still high, as is his potential; he just hasn’t played enough tennis.

Side-lined with an injury for the second half of the 2025 season, Draper lost ground to many of his biggest rivals.

And having only returned last month, he wasn’t quite up to speed in time to defend his Indian Wells crown.

Therefore, while his current ranking leaves a lot to be desired, there is no need for Draper to panic.

Who is to blame for Jack Draper’s injury issues?

Should he remain injury-free, the chances are Draper will start to head back in the right direction before too long.

He’ll have a chance to do so later this month, at the Miami Open.

Losing in the second round last year, Draper only has 10 points to defend in 2026, giving him a perfect opportunity to move forwards in Miami.

Unfortunately for Draper, he hasn’t exactly excelled in Florida over the years…

Draper has never reached the third round of the Miami Open.

The tournament is statistically his worst at the Masters 1000 level.

Draper has only won two career matches at the Miami Open.

He’ll be hoping for a much better showing this year!

When will Jack Draper be at risk of another ranking drop?

Draper reached the final of the Madrid Open Masters 1000 event last May.

There, he lost to Norway’s Casper Ruud, but earned himself 650 points.

If he were to drop 650 points from his current tally, he’d be level on points with the world number 43, Adrian Mannarino.

There’s plenty of tennis to be played between now and the Madrid Open, though, and Draper could well be out of trouble by then.

The 2026 Miami Open main draw begins on Tuesday, March 17.
