Jack Draper sends message to Kyle Edmund after he announces his retirement from tennis

Kyle Edmund has announced his retirement from tennis.

The former British number one reached as high as world number 14 in October 2018, and inspired a generation of aspiring British tennis players alongside the likes of Andy Murray, Dan Evans and Cameron Norrie.

Edmund, who reached the 2018 Australian Open semi-finals, announced his retirement from the sport on Monday evening, bringing his storied career to an end.

The 30-year-old was once one of the most exciting prospects in British tennis. However, a spate of injuries hampered his ability to kick on, resulting in a severe rankings decrease from which he never truly recovered.

The current British number one, Jack Draper, has paid tribute to Edmund following the announcement.

On X, [Twitter] British number one and world number four Jack Draper posted a heartwarming message regarding his compatriot, noting Edmund’s influence on his life.

Draper said: “Congrats on an amazing career Kyle Edmund.

“A big inspiration for me growing up. Best of luck in the next chapter of your life.”

Edmund, who boasted a gigantic serve and superb forehand, won two junior Grand Slam doubles titles as a youngster.

He later became only the sixth player in history to make their Davis Cup debut in a final, playing David Goffin in the 2015 Davis Cup final. Great Britain would go on to win the match against Belgium and consequently, the tournament.

The British star won two ATP Tour singles titles during his career, the 2018 Antwerp Open and the 2020 New York Open.

Cameron Norrie congratulates Kyle Edmund on his ‘top career’

Cameron Norrie, another former British number one, has congratulated Kyle Edmund on his ‘top career.’

Norrie posted a photo of himself and Edmund holding their trophies after winning the 2018 Estoril Open Men’s Doubles tournament. The pair dominated at the tournament, failing to drop a set on their way to the title.

As per tennis blogger and journalist Mario Boccardi, Norrie said on his Instagram story: “All the best for the future mate – top career.

“Throw-back to the only time we played doubles.”
