The fifth seed, who finished runner up at Melbourne Park last year, took one hour 42 minutes to see off her opponent and will next face either Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium or Alberta Brianti of Italy in round two.

Ivanovic crashed out of the quarter-finals of the Brisbane International tennis tournament last week but had declared herself fully fit ahead of the first grand slam of the year.

But the Serb struggled to overcome her opponent in the first set as, after winning the first game, she proceeded to lose the next three.

However, Ivanovic clawed her way back, taking the next two games before edging ahead 4-3.

Goerges again pulled level but Ivanovic eventually got the better of her opponent, breaking her serve in the 12th game to take the set.

The second set began as a close fought affair before Ivanovic broke Goerges serve in the eighth game and then comfortably won the next game to take the set 6-3 and ensure her place In the next round.
