The Serbian was blown away 6-1 in the opening set and after she had recovered to take the second 6-4, Petrova ran out a 6-4 winner in the third to clinch the match.

The only other seed in action was top seed Elena Dementieva, who had no trouble dispatching fellow Russian Maria Kirilenko 6-4 6-4.

Elsewhere in the women’s main draw, Jie Zheng defeated Carla Suarez Navarro in straight sets, while there were also wins for Virginie Razzano over Alize Cornet and Samantha Stosur against Sabine Lisicki.

Britain’s Melanie South failed to qualify for the first round after going down 6-4 6-2 to Vera Dushevina in the last round of qualifying.

In the men’s first round, second seed Dmitry Tursunov needed three sets to come through against Fabio Fognini 6-3 4-6 6-4.

Fourth seed Fabrice Santoro overcame Robert Kendrick 6-3 6-2, sixth seed Sam Querrey defeated Paul Capdeville and eight seed Guillermo Garcia-Lopez made it past Evgeny Korolev.

Having received a wild card into the main draw, Britain’s Josh Goodall took full advantage by defeating Japanese qualifier Tatsuma Ito to set up a second-round encounter with Ivan Ljubicic.

He is joined by fellow Britons James Ward, who eased past Victor Crivoi, and Alex Bogdanovic, who beat Ivo Minar.

Colin Fleming was not so fortunate, losing to wild card Yen-Hsun Lu despite taking the second set 6-1.
