Serena Williams US Open 2022

“I’m a little bored” – Serena Williams teases fans with return

Serena Williams had finished her career as a professional tennis player after receiving a huge farewell amongst lavish tributes at the US Open earlier this year. Now that retirement is in doubt…

Over the top of a new tennis racket, Serena wrote “I’m a little bored,” which she posted to her Instagram story. This has added fuel to the fire suggesting that the 23-time Grand Slam Champion has not retired, a word that she has insisted she is not keen on.

Back in August, Williams announced that she was “evolving away from tennis” in an essay for Vogue. Consequently, the farewell tour began as she played in Toronto and Cincinnati in the build-up to the US Open. Fans were left worried as it was not the Serena Williams they were used to, winning only one match in these two events. However, when it came to the US Open in New York, Williams showed why many consider her the greatest of all time.

This was highlighted against Anett Kontaveit, who was seeded number two at the time. There were signs of vintage Williams which, on top of a raucous crowd, made for an unforgettable night of tennis.

She eventually bowed out in the third round to Ajla Tomljanovic, fighting until the very last ball. There were emotional scenes on the Arthur Ashe Stadium as she waved to the fans, who were in raptures for the tennis legend.

This recent social media post is not the first time Williams has gave fans suspicions that she had not said goodbye for good. After her defeat at Flushing Meadows she jokingly said to the press, “I always did love Australia.”

Following on from that in October she gave more hints at a conference in San Francisco while promoting her investment company, Serena Ventures.

“I am not retired,” Williams said, “The chances (of a return) are very high,” which was the biggest teaser to date. She certainly would not be the first sports star to return after stepping away from the sport.

Even if the 41-year old does not have any serious intentions to professionally return to the sport, she is definitely still playing in some capacity. She was pictured this week, alongside her sister Venus and Urszula Radwanska, smiling in front of a tennis court with a racket in hand.
