Iga Swiatek was eliminated from the China Open on Wednesday by American star Emma Navarro.

Swiatek was far from her best against Navarro, hitting an alarming 70 unforced errors during their contest.

Consequently, Swiatek’s chances of catching Aryna Sabalenka in the race for year-end world number one have been reduced significantly.

As for Emma Navarro, she will face compatriot Jessica Pegula in the China Open quarter-finals.

Navarro, who had never previously beaten Swiatek, is far from the first American star to record a victory against the Pole this year.

Iga Swiatek has struggled against American players in 2025.

Remarkably, Swiatek has a 5-7 record against American players this year.

In 2025, the Wimbledon champion has a 1-1 record against Amanda Anisimova, Madison Keys, Emma Navarro and Danielle Collins.

Against Caty McNally, Swiatek has a positive record, defeating Caty McNally at Wimbledon.

However, the Polish six-time Grand Slam champion has failed to defeat either Coco Gauff or Jessica Pegula this year.

Gauff first defeated Swiatek at the United Cup in January, winning their contest 6-4, 6-4. A few months later, Gauff demolished Swiatek at the Madrid Open, winning 6-1, 6-1.

As for Pegula, the American and Swiatek have contested one match in 2025: at the Bad Homburg Open in Germany.

On the grass court, Pegula defeated Swiatek to win the title, 6-4, 7-5.

Iga Swiatek has no points to defend at her next tournament

Swiatek, who is expected to play at the Wuhan Open tournament later this month, has an opportunity to further secure her place in the WTA top 2.

Currently, Swiatek is on 8,443 points. By the end of the Wuhan Open, the Pole could find herself on 9,443 points.

Following her split with Tomasz Wiktorowski in 2024, Swiatek decided to withdraw from the Wuhan Open.
