The potential match of the entire Italian Open has now been confirmed, with Naomi Osaka set to face Iga Swiatek later today in the Round of 16 of the event.
It marks a surprisingly early time for two titans of the sport to clash, and despite the Polish superstar’s prowess on clay, it’s hard to predict who might emerge victorious.
Regardless, both seem supremely excited at the prospect.
This enthusiasm should surely translate into a free-flowing and hard-hitting encounter, with Iga Swiatek stating what she’s expecting from the four-time Grand Slam champion.
Iga Swiatek previews her Italian Open match vs Naomi Osaka
Speaking on court initially, Swiatek offered a brief overview of the match.
She simply stated: “Naomi is a great player. We played a lot, and also a really tough match at Roland Garros 2 years ago. I know what she can bring and how well she can play when she feels the ball. So I’ll be ready. I’ll prepare tactically and I’ll be ready.”
Who is winning this blockbuster Italian Open showdown? 👀
However, upon entering her press conference, it unsurprisingly dominated the proceedings.
She referenced their Roland Garros classic from two years ago, as she expanded on that preview: “Yeah, I think it’s going to be a tough match. She is playing better on clay, I would say. Two years ago I could feel that at Roland Garros. I’m going to prepare tactically, see how she plays now. We had a chance to practice in Madrid.
“When she has a good day, she feels the ball well, she’s a really tough opponent. I need to be ready to, yeah, not give anything for free, fight for every point.”
Swiatek concluded by maturely stating: “Either if I win or lose, I can kind of also see where my level is at.”
Ironically, Osaka gave a hilarious reaction when told she was facing Swiatek in her own press conference too.
Iga Swiatek’s head-to-head record vs Naomi Osaka
This will be just the fourth time that Swiatek and Naomi Osaka have clashed, and it has all the hallmarks of being their best so far.
Alas, as referenced earlier, it will take something special to beat that Roland Garros showdown in 2024.
That is actually the last time they faced one another, with Swiatek narrowly edging that encounter, 7-6, 1-6, 7-5.
What could stop Naomi Osaka from winning a Grand Slam title in 2026?
She also won the match they played before that, in the Miami Open final in 2022.
Osaka did win their first-ever meeting, played at the Rogers Cup in 2019.
