Garbine Muguruza Indian Wells Masters 2022

‘I have come back fresh and eager’ – Garbine Muguruza discusses tour return

Former world number one Garbine Muguruza has opened up about her return from injury at the Madrid Open this week and that despite her being “eager to start” she’s “always felt pressure” playing in Madrid.

The two-time Grand Slam champion is set to return this week for her first taste of competitive action since the Indian Wells Masters at the beginning of March.

Muguruza lost her opening match in that tournament despite ‘bagelling’ the home crowd favorite Alison Riske in the first set. She then went on to only win four more games before crashing out of the tournament in California.

The current world number nine then was forced to pull out of both the Miami Open as well as the tournament in Charleston due to a shoulder injury.

Reflecting on her return to full fitness, Garbine Muguruza said she cannot wait to be back on the court and that despite missing playing matches, she felt that she needed the time to recover.

Speaking exclusively with Marca, she said, “I have come back fresh and eager to start. I would love to put out my best tennis in Madrid and every year I come with that mentality.

“I have worked with the Indiba, contrasts of cold and heat. A lot of work with the physiotherapist because he had a problem with the tendon and had to reduce inflammation. It is a normal problem among tennis players, but it requires a period of rest.

“For sure not having competed as much when you go to play you notice it, but I’m glad I made that decision. My body needed it.”

The 2017 Wimbledon Champion also mentioned how she feels more pressure ahead of the Madrid Open due to her being a Spanish national and the WTA 1000 event is the only tournament held in Spain on the WTA tour.

“I have always felt pressure on me in Madrid because I consider it to be a very important tournament for me. It is the only tournament we have in Spain”
