Hubert Hurkacz stunned Alexander Zverev at the United Cup in his first match back from injury in seven months.

Hurkacz had not played a competitive match since beating Robert Bautista Agut at ‘s-Hertogenbosch, before he handed Mark Lajal a walkover at the Dutch event.

The star announced he was finishing his season in September 2025 after undergoing arthroscopic right knee surgery.

The Pole looked back to his very best upon his return as he hit 21 aces in 10 service games in a 6-3, 6-4 victory against Zverev at the United Cup.

The Pole was delighted with his comprehensive victory over Zverev and he detailed his journey back to fitness after the match.

“It’s been a while since I’ve been competing. 7 months. I’ve been going through difficult times with the team. It was very challenging. They were all supporting me. They were all behind me.

“We went through a long period of time not competing and not knowing when we’ll be able to be back on court again. I was trying to cherish and enjoy every moment here on court today.”

Hurkacz’s next singles match will be against Tallon Griekspoor, as Poland take on the Netherlands in their next round-robin.

Could Hubert Hurkacz challenge the top 10?

Hurkacz has proved that he has the weapons to frighten the ATP Tour’s very best, as well as the previous experience.

The Pole has reached a career-high of World No. 6, won a Masters 1000 title, and reached the semi-final of a Grand Slam.

What is your bold prediction for the 2026 tennis season?

If Hurkacz continues to show the signs he showed against Zverev in the United Cup, then he could definitely rise back up the rankings.

Outside of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, the ATP Tour is desperately seeking another top star who can achieve a consistency level.

Hurkacz could certainly be that player, but the Australian swing will be a real litmus test for the talented Pole.
