Elina Svitolina won her fourth career WTA 1000 victory after beating Coco Gauff in the Italian Open final on Saturday.

Svitolina proved too strong for the American star in Rome, winning 6–4, 6–7, 6–2 in the Nicola Pietrangeli stadium.

The Ukrainian has now won three Italian Open titles, following successes in 2017 and 2018.

Svitolina also became the oldest player since 1990 to defeat three top-five ranked players at a WTA event, eclipsing Serena Williams’ heroics at the 2013 Miami Open.

Following her triumph in Rome, Svitolina has risen three places in the WTA rankings to world number seven, overtaking Jasmine Paolini, Victoria Mboko and Mirra Andreeva; whose ranking has decreased by one spot to world number eight.

Svitolina now has 4,315 WTA ranking points to her name, and she looks set to secure a top-eight seed for Roland Garros – which is set to begin on May 24.

Karolina Muchova also increased her ranking by one spot in Rome, despite losing her opening match to Anastasia Potapova.

Jasmine Paolini has taken the biggest fall of any player, moving down five places in the rankings to world number 13 following her loss to Elise Mertens in the Italian Open third round.

Paolini, a two-time major finalist, surrendered 935 WTA ranking points following her loss to Mertens.

The Ukrainian, seeded 13th, then defeated Anna Bondar 7-6, 7-5, and Bernarda Pera 7-6, 7-6.

In the fourth round, Svitolina knocked out 2024 French Open finalist Jasmine Paolini, 4-6, 7-6, 6-1.

“For sure a lot of positives from me. Not only from this match, but I feel like in general the tournament for me was very good,” Svitolina told reporters in Paris after losing to the Pole.

“The clay court season was very good. I played really well with different kind of players and won a lot of matches.

“Of course, today Iga, already doesn’t matter on which surface, but she presents a big challenge, so you have to play your best game against her.

“And especially here, I feel on this court she won many matches, she won many trophies here. So, of course, she’s feeling full of confidence.

“Yeah, you need to play from the first point until the last point your best tennis to beat her. Yeah, as I said, I’m happy the way that I can challenge the top players, and that’s what I’m training for, to try to, you know, find a way to beat them, to try to find the way to be back in top 10.

“This is my goal, and I try to work really hard for that.”

Following her quarter-final run at last year’s event, Svitolina is defending 430 WTA ranking points at this year’s tournament.
