Holger Rune continues to surprise many as he ramps up his preparations for a return to tennis from his Achilles injury.

Rune last competed on the ATP Tour in October 2025, when he tore his Achilles tendon in a Stockholm semifinal clash with Ugo Humbert.

The Dane quickly underwent surgery to fix the issue, with Rune making a remarkable return to the practice court not long after.

Now just seven months after the injury, he is in contention to return to competitive tennis at the Hamburg Open in mid-May.

It’s an impressive recovery time, but more importantly his upcoming appearance at the ATP 500 event is a massive risk that could really hurt his entire career.

Are you worried Holger Rune is returning from injury too soon? 😬

Holger Rune is returning from Achilles injury too soon

Aged 23, Rune boasts a fantastic career so far, which includes five titles and a highest rank of world number four.

But simply put, the Dane could be doing himself more harm than good by playing in Germany later this month.

Hopefully he stays injury-free at the tournament, but there is a chance he could aggravate his Achilles injury, which could produce lasting damage.

He certainly won’t be as sharp as he once was, and there is no chance whatsoever of any of his opponents going easy should they come face-to-face.

One poor decision or lack in concentration could be disastrous for Rune, who could definitely have continued his work behind the scenes for a little bit longer rather than returning to competitive action.

Moreover, while he is clearly looking to find fitness for Roland Garros, it is ultimately a strange decision to return bang in the middle of the clay season.

His opponents will be up to speed on the surface, with clay generally considered the hardest to play on over both grass and hard courts.

Holger Rune of Denmark is assisted off the court as he is forced to retire following an injury against Ugo Humbert of France during the Men's Singles semi-final match on day eight of the BNP Paribas Nordic Open 2025 at Royal Tennis Hall on October 18, 2025 in Stockholm, Sweden.

Holger Rune’s ATP record ahead of return from injury

Rune shouldn’t be focusing on his ATP ranking whatsoever at this moment in time, with his absence resulting in a drop to 39th.

Again, going all the way and winning the Hamburg Open title should take a backseat, with fitness and health of the utmost importance right now.

He should at least take great confidence from his ability on the surface, on which he has claimed three of his five titles.

But he definitely needs time to find his feet, and that won’t be an easy task given the star-studded players set to be involved.

The entry list includes Alexander Zverev, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Ben Shelton, Lorenzo Musetti and Joao Fonseca among other high-profile names.

Rune will enter the tournament as a five-time champion on the ATP Tour, with a career win-loss record of 175-107.
