Holger Rune’s loss to Valentin Vacherot at the Shanghai Masters highlighted a huge issue the Dane has suffered from in 2025.
The Dane was shocked by the World No. 202 in three sets as he missed a big opportunity to win the second Masters title of his career.
The World No. 11 was the third-highest-ranked player left in the Shanghai Masters after several seeds fell in the early stages.
Rune has been consistent at ATP 1000 events, but the talented star has now suffered two upset losses in 2025.

Holger Rune has lost to two qualifiers in ATP 1000 events
Rune has reached an ATP 1000 final in 2025 in a losing effort to Jack Draper at Indian Wells, but the 22-year-old has also produced a worrying statistic this year.
The Dane has now lost twice to qualifiers in the quarter-finals of a Masters event, after his shock loss to Vacherot at the Shanghai Masters.
Rune also lost to Terence Atmane in the Cincinnati Open quarter-finals while he was ranked outside of the top 100.
The 22-year-old has now missed the chance at two Masters semi-finals after losing to players ranked at least 100 places below him.
The ranking points and prize money on offer would have been handsome for Rune, which will surely be incredibly annoying for the star.
Rune could have had his ATP Finals place in Turin already booked if he had found a way to get past players he massively out-ranks.
It’s worth noting that Rune was suffering with a leg issue in the third set with Vacherot, but the star should also have arguably had the match wrapped up already.
Holger Rune’s ATP 1000 performances in 2025
Rune has not lifted an ATP 1000 trophy since winning the Paris Masters in 2022 and the Dane has rarely come close in 2025.
The 22-year-old’s final appearance at Indian Wells was as close as he got, but he only won four games against Draper.
Outside of losing to two qualifiers in the quarter-finals, Rune reached the fourth round at the Canadian Open and the third round of the Italian Open.
Rune also suffered two early exits in Monte Carlo and Madrid, retiring in his matches against Nuno Borges and Flavio Cobolli.
The Dane’s poor performances at ATP 1000 events in 2025 have hampered his ability to cement himself as a top 10 player.
