Holger Rune ruptured his Achilles tendon at the Stockholm Open last October and hasn’t played a match since.
The former world number four has been sidelined with injury, missing months of action.
It’s unclear exactly when Rune plans to return, but his recovery seems to be on track, according to his frequent social media updates.

Holger Rune confirms he will miss the Monte-Carlo Masters
Rune shared the following message on X.
“This year I will enjoy my favourite hometown tournament, the Monte-Carlo Masters from the stands,” he said.
“As much as I wanted this to be my comeback tournament, I still have my last heavy physical rehab block to finish before I can dance around a tennis court again.”

Born in Gentofte, Denmark, Rune resides in Monte Carlo.
The Dane has enjoyed success at the Monte-Carlo Masters in the past, but will be forced to watch from the stands in 2026.

- 2024 Monte-Carlo Masters – Lost in QF to Jannik Sinner
- 2025 Monte-Carlo Masters – Lost in 1R to Nuno Borges
Rune came closest to the title three years ago.
In 2023, the youngster proved his class in the principality, reaching his first clay-court Masters 1000 final.

He met Russia’s Andrey Rublev in the final.
Rune made a strong start, winning the first set 7-5, to move within touching distance of the title.
He couldn’t maintain the advantage, though, as Rublev fought back to win 5-7, 6-2, 7-5.

Rune would love a chance to go one better, but will have to wait until 2027.
His Monte-Carlo withdrawal guarantees he will have missed the first three Masters 1000 events of the year, but will he miss any more?
It’s tough to know for sure, but his statement seemed to imply that he’s almost ready to come back.
2026 Masters 1000 schedule
- Indian Wells – Begins March 4 (Missed)
- Miami Open – Begins March 17 (Will miss)
- Monte-Carlo – Begins April 6 (Will miss)
- Madrid Open – Begins April 22
- Italian Open – Begins May 6
- Canadian Open – Begins August 1
- Cincinnati Open – Begins August 13
- Shanghai Masters – Begins October 7
- Paris Masters – Begins October 31
The Madrid Open begins two weeks after the Monte-Carlo Masters, with the Italian Open starting shortly after.
It seems likely that Rune will make his return at one of those two Masters 1000 events.
If not, we can expect to see the Dane compete in Canada after he confirmed his appearance at the tournament last month.
When a fan asked Rune on X if he would be able to play Montreal, he provided the following response.
“I will be there,” he said.
So even if Rune can’t recover in time for the clay Masters 1000 tournaments, he should be back for the US Open warm-up events in Canada and Cincinnati.
How far has Holger Rune dropped in the rankings?
Missing several months of tennis, it’s no surprise that Rune’s ranking has taken a hit.
The 22-year-old sits 28th in the Live Rankings, dropping 650 points this week from his Indian Wells final appearance in 2025.

Luckily for Rune, he doesn’t have many points to defend until mid-April.
Last year, he lost his opening matches at the Miami Open and Monte-Carlo Masters.
He did, however, win the Barcelona Open title, picking up 500 points.
If he were to drop 500 points from his current tally, he’d sit just inside the world’s top 40.
Only time will tell what the future holds for Rune, but we certainly hope he recovers soon!
