The Australian, playing on a wildcard in Germany, did not have it all his own way against the local lad but was ultimately too strong as Petzschner saved two match points before eventually succumbing.

Hewitt will play Dutchman Thiemo de Bakker in the second round after the qualifier ousted fifth seed Rainer Schuettler on his own patch.

De Bakker, ranked 236 in the world, beat the world number 30 6-3 6-3 with the minimum of fuss.

Croatian Mario Cilic, seeded second, moved into the next round by beating qualifier Dieter Kindlmann 6-3 6-2.

Fourth seed Tomas Berdych saw off German qualifier Sascha Kloer 7-6 6-4 while Paul-Henri Mathieu progressed with a 6-3 6-2 win over Algerian Lamine Ouahab.

Eighth seed Igor Kunitsyn was knocked out by a 7-5 5-7 6-3 defeat at the hands of Italian Potito Starace.
