The Australian battled back from a set and a break down to secure a 3-6 6-3 6-3 victory against Dutchman Robin Haase after an hour and 57 minutes on court.

Hewitt is only the third active player behind Roger Federer (942) and Nadal (675) to reach the milestone. The 33-year-old will now face the world No.1 for the first time in four years.

Hewitt has not beaten Nadal in their last five encounters, but will take heart that he leads their head-to-head on hard courts 3-1.

"Obviously taking on the World No. 1 is not going to be easy, but that’s why I still play the game, to have the opportunity to have a crack at the best players," said Hewitt.
