Heather Watson’s return to the WTA Tour has been an emphatic one.

After a six-month injury layoff, Watson has qualified for the main draw in her very first tournament back, defeating Diane Parry and Liya Karatantschewa in the qualifying rounds.

Watson has now qualified for a WTA event for the first time since the 2025 Queen’s Club Championships.

The last time Watson played in the main draw of a WTA event was at the 2025 Wimbledon Championships, where she received a wildcard.

The former British number one now has a significant opportunity following her placement in the main draw.

Heather Watson will play Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in the Mexico Open first round

When looking at the Mexico Open draw, one might conclude that Heather Watson has received a tough first match after drawing seventh seed Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in the first round.

However, this could not be further from the truth.

Despite being the seventh seed in Mexico, Bouzas Maneiro has endured a torrid start to the 2026 season.

Do you think women should play best-of-five set matches?

The Spaniard has lost all four of her WTA singles matches, most recently losing to Belinda Bencic in the Qatar Open first round.

In fact, Bouzas Maneiro has only won three of her past 11 matches on the Tour, dating back to October 2025.

With the Spaniard not playing her best tennis, Watson has an opportunity to capitalise.

If Watson were to beat Bouzas Maneiro, she would win 32 ranking points in addition to the 25 she has gained for qualifying.

Ranked 281 in the world, these ranking points would see Watson make a considerable leap in the standings.

The last time Heather Watson competed at a WTA Tour event in Mexico

Heather Watson is competing at a WTA Tour event in Mexico for the first time in four years.

Watson last participated in a Mexican WTA Tour event at the 2022 Monterrey Open.

Watson opened her 2022 campaign by defeating qualifier Jule Niemeier in a third-set tiebreak before losing to Nuria Parrizas Diaz.

Two years earlier, Watson ended a four-year trophy drought after winning the Acapulco Open in Mexico.

Watson defeated 17-year-old Leylah Fernandez in the final, winning the title on her 10th match point.

After winning the title, Watson said: “It was so up and down but I’m so happy to get my fourth title. It’s been a few years, so I’m just really, really happy I came through that match.

“I had those points in the second set, and I wasn’t able to win that. But I was really pleased with how I stayed in the moment, and won that third set.”
