The likes of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Andy Murray have won the Olympic gold medal since tennis’ reintroduction into the event in 1988.

The event is often considered as important as a Grand Slam, with Djokovic desperately chansing the elusive award for most of his career.

He eventually won the top spot at the Paris Olympics in 2024, by defeating Carlos Alcaraz in the Philippe-Chatrier final.

The Olympic singles gold medal bizarrely eluded Federer for his entire career, although he did stake claim to a doubles title.

In Athens in 2004, an unsung player managed to win both the singles and the doubles title despite the likes of Federer, Andy Roddick, and Carlos Moya competing.

Nicolás Massú’s incredible Olympics campaign in 2004

Nicolas Massu never reached past the fourth round of a Grand Slam and he never cracked the top five of the rankings.

Massu’s best-ever performance at a Grand Slam up until the Athens Olympics was third round appearances at Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

Despite this, the star cruised through the singles competition at the Olympics, with victories over Mardy Fish, Moya, and Gustavo Kuerten.

Massu won just six career titles throughout his tennis career, which makes it even more spectacular that the Olympic gold was one of them.

The Chilean star didn’t end there either as he also won the doubles Olympic gold alongside Fernando Gonzalez for his nation.

The Chileans defeated Mario Ancic and Ivan Ljbucic of Croatia, the Bryan Brothers of America, and Nicolas Kiefer and Rainer Schüttler of Germany in the final.

Nicolas Massu broke the mould at the Olympics

Massu became the first male player since tennis was brought back to the games to win an Olympic gold medal in singles competition without being ranked inside the top five.

He followed in the footsteps of Marc Rosset, who won the Olympic gold medal in Barcelona for Switzerland in 1992.

The Chilean also became the first player to win both the singles and doubles since tennis was reintroduced to the games.

Nadal has since emulated Massu by winning both formats for Spain at the Beijing games in 2008.

Male winners of the Olympic gold since 1988 include Miloslav Mečíř, Andre Agassi, Yevgeny Kafelnikov, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, Alexander Zverev, and Djokovic.
